Another gem for Anne Tyler fans
My brother first intorduced me to american novellist Anne Tyler, and I've been hooked ever since.

In her portraits of modern american life, there's none of the trivial, nor the lightwieght nor the brashness you might expect in a modern american novel. But then again Anne Tyler novels aren't trying to be hip, and being set in Balitmore, it's East Coast, without being Dawsons Creek preppy, or Sex and the City New Yorkish or WASP. Anne Tyler's novel are always all about people - their lives, their thoughts, their view of the world, and the world's view of them.

In A Patchwork Planet we catch a glimpse into the life of Barnaby Gaitlin, a turning-thirty loser, living in Baltimore, working at Rent-A-Back (one of those jobs which you can only imagine existing in non-metropolitain America) and resigned to be the black sheep of his famously philanthropic family. The nice thing abuot Anne Tyler novels though is that people's lives are rarely as hopeless as they might at first appear....
