A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush

A hard slog - in many ways....
Although I did finish A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, I never want to read any Eric Newby ever again - just too "child of the empire" with the innate cultural arrogance of a stereotypical 1950s upper class (?) ex army officer.
However, on the plus side, you do get a fascinating insight into central asian (not just afghanistani) society, culture and history, which although irrevocably lost (given that you can go on Explore trips to this part of the world ....) nevertheless remains relevant today.
